The Mindful Fashion Circular Design Awards 2024 have celebrated the finest innovations in sustainable fashion during a gala event showcasing Aotearoa New Zealand’s creative talents. This year’s awards highlighted the incredible potential of reimagined waste materials, challenging designers and businesses from across the country to demonstrate innovative approaches to keeping materials in use.

Circular Design Awards 2024 Recognises Outstanding Achievements

The Circular Design Awards 2024 recognized four exceptional creations that captured the spirit of circular design, with the Supreme Award winners sharing a prize pool of $50,000. The Award for Creative Excellence in Circular Design went to Jacqueline Tsang for her work titled “Fabric has Memory.” Tsang’s design ingeniously repurposes obsolete coffee sacks, damaged kimonos, and vintage tapestries into a luxurious high-fashion outfit that pays homage to her ancestors and reflects her deep connection to place.

Sue Prescott received the Award for Material Innovation for her piece “Southerly Change,” which incorporates 95% sail-cloth waste sourced from Wellington. This contemporary raincoat not only provides protection from the unpredictable weather of the region but also tells a story of maritime adventures, giving new life to materials that would otherwise go to waste.

Ella Fidler was awarded the title of Excellence from a Rising Talent in Circular Design for her entry “Scrap Yarn.” Fidler carefully selected waste material that would be recyclable at the end of its lifecycle, showcasing her commitment to sustainable practices and innovative design.

Untouched World won the newly introduced Circular Business Innovation Award for its Rubbish Socks initiative. This project demonstrated exceptional adherence to circularity principles, achieving an impressive 99% textile waste recycling rate and diverting over one ton of textile waste in the past year.

A Call to Action for Sustainable Practices

Jacinta FitzGerald, Chief Executive of Mindful Fashion, commended the outstanding creativity displayed by this year’s finalists. She expressed pride in how the Supreme winners treated their chosen textiles as precious resources, using them to create outcomes of greater value. FitzGerald noted that the awards aim to educate consumers and businesses about the importance of transitioning to circular systems, which could significantly reduce emissions.

The awards were delivered in partnership with the Gattung Foundation, celebrating the most innovative sustainable designs and encouraging the next generation of designers to rethink their practices. Earlier in the year, Mindful Fashion released the impactful report ‘Threads of Tomorrow,’ which highlighted the alarming rate of clothing waste in New Zealand and underscored the necessity for a sustainable fashion future.

Looking Ahead

With the Circular Design Awards 2024, Mindful Fashion NZ continues to champion local industry efforts toward sustainability, following the four action areas and corresponding recommendations outlined in the Threads of Tomorrow report. These initiatives not only focus on reducing waste but also strive to inspire and educate the next generation of designers in Aotearoa.

As the fashion industry looks toward a more sustainable future, the success of the Mindful Fashion Circular Design Awards serves as a beacon of hope and innovation, demonstrating that with creativity and collaboration, a waste-free fashion industry is within reach.
