New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW) has announced a strategic shift in its annual format, opting to transition to a biennial schedule amidst economic challenges affecting the fashion industry. The decision entails moving Fashion Week from August 2024 to the latter half of 2025.

The move comes in response to the economic downturn and pressures on consumer spending, which have significantly impacted the fashion retail sector. Despite early commitments from anchor designers and sponsors, including Shark Beauty, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited and media partner NZME, among others, the prevailing low consumer confidence necessitated a reevaluation of NZFW’s scheduling.

According to NZFW organizers, the decision was influenced by feedback from designers across the country, highlighting the need for dedicated time and space to focus on core retail business operations. With consumer spending at an all-time low, the event lacked a robust lineup of designers necessary to sustain a weeklong schedule.

“Staging the event less frequently is a more strategic allocation of resources and enables the sector in achieving its sustainability goals, an important consideration for designers as well as our own values,” said NZFW owner Feroz Ali in a press release. “We are confident that the revised schedule, delivered with the support of our partners, will work well for the industry and Auckland events calendar.”

Additionally, logistical challenges, such as the closure of the Wynyard Quarter crossing bridge, further contributed to the decision to pause the event for the year. The closure presented significant obstacles for public attendance and access to the Viaduct Events Centre, a key venue for NZFW.

While acknowledging the success and resilience demonstrated by NZFW in its return in 2023, organizers emphasised the importance of a mindful shift within Aotearoa’s fashion industry. Transitioning to a biennial schedule aligns with sustainability goals and allows for a more strategic allocation of resources.

The extended timeframe for NZFW 2025 provides participants with ample preparation and planning opportunities, ensuring financial support for presenting brands and collections. Organisers express confidence that the revised schedule, supported by partners, will serve the industry well and contribute to the Auckland events calendar, saying they plan to “continue to stage an impactful and innovative, world-class event that is a befitting showcase for our talented industry.”

Further updates on NZFW’s 2025 dates will be provided in the coming months.
