Recently, designers have been elevating menswear collections with bold colours, playful patterns and androgynous pieces that have given men the ability to explore their personal expression. We can’t help but draw inspiration from some of our favourite male musicians who are bringing a little edge to the menswear game in 2018. Here are our best dressed male musicians that continually bring their A-game from the stage to the red carpet.

Harry Styles

Harry Styles

Styles by name, styles by nature. Harry has come a long way from his One Direction boy band days and we are loving his slightly edgier look that pushes masculine boundaries.

Polished suits that play with vibrant print and colour are a staple look for Styles. He has frequented coordinated suits from Saint LaurentCharles Jeffrey Loverboy and Alexander McQueen but most notably wears bespoke suits from Gucci that often embrace the brand’s essence for lux fabrics and embellishment. Recently, Styles appeared in the Gucci AW 2018 menswear campaign where he looked quintessentially like British music royalty.

Another key look for Harry is his ’80s inspired coordinates which incorporate loose fitted shirts and a high waisted fitted trouser (often Burberry). Harry isn’t afraid to embrace statement colours that other male musicians shy away from.

Childish Gambino

Donald Glover a.k.a Childish Gambino, may be making a statement with his recent track “This Is America”, but he is also making some strong statements with his choice of clothing. Heavily influenced by the ’70s in his earthy colour palette and choice in suede blazers, Glover mixes this with modern fresh pieces.

Recently hosting Saturday Night Live, Glover wore a timeless coordinate with the help of Gucci. His sandy coloured blazer with wide lapels enhanced his shoulders and slimmed his waist by keeping the jacket buttoned and fitted. The tailored pant sat high on his waist and was teamed with a classic white tank the kept him looking lean. The look was accessorised with a Tiffany & Co chain.

Another great look from Glover was at the Black Panther premiere where he embraced statement colour. Wearing a Dolce & Gabanna orange metallic suit that caught the eye of everyone, he teamed this with an equally vibrant leopard shirt. We appreciate that Donald Glover knows his style and sticks to it. He is often seen wearing a cigarette pant, cut just above the ankle which helps accentuate height.

A$AP Rocky

“Fashion is almost like a religion, for me at least.”

Rapper A$AP Rocky is an active participant in the fashion scene, sitting front row at Paris Fashion Week every season, surrounded by OG supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.

The musician is a big influence in shaping street style as it enters the luxury market. Luxury fashion house Christian Dior made him the face of Dior men in 2016 and ever since the rapper has continually upped his red carpet attire.

One of his notable looks is when he wore a road-cone orange inflatable women’s Balenciaga jacket paired with matching fluoro track pants and a Gucci sweater. This wasn’t the first or last time we saw A$AP embracing the bright puffer trend and has since been seen wearing North Face’s metallic coats and Raf Simmons extreme sized puffer.

A$AP can also wear formalwear like no other. At the 2017 Met Gala he opted for a casual denim jacket and turtleneck. He later stepped out in a classic cut suit with floral lapels and a grosgrain neck bow (courtesy of Gucci) and made it a streetwear must have.

Troye Sivan

Troye Sivan made this list for his 2018 Met Gala look alone where he wore a tailored Valentino red suit. The pant had a satin cummerbund which broke up the coordinate and was paired with a netted undershirt.

The Australian hitmaker is an advocate for gender and racial diversity in the industry. He is constantly pushing gender boundaries which reflect in his clothing at red carpet events. His everyday look is somewhat uninformed pairing tight skinny jeans with a loose t-shirt and oversized bomber. He gives off an effortless vibe in his day-to-day clothing with tonal colours yet ensures it is always well-fitted. This is an age-appropriate casual look that fits well on a smaller frame.

Tinie Tempah

Tinie Tempah describes his personal style as “[A] bit of a mixture between high fashion and unique vintage pieces with a little bit of street trends. For example, I might find a really nice, suede dinner jacket that I’d wear with a basic plain white shirt and some chinos and a pair of Nike trainers.”

The English rapper may not be a style icon on our shores, but he definitely influences fashion in the UK. He recently walked the Dolce & Gabanna Spring Summer 2019 menswear show wearing a renaissance-esque suit with floral detailing and loafers.

Tinie Tempah is the designer and director behind the brand, What We Wear, a contemporary streetwear brand with an edge. His Spring Summer 2018 collection was a refined mixture of classic casual pieces that embrace colour and sportswear lux.

It will be interesting to see who will be the next contenders to take the crowns from these kings of style.
