There are several reasons why the Volkswagen Golf has a place in my imaginary Hall of Fame for cars: it’s a perfect blend of practicality, performance and design. Its iconic hatchback design, instantly recognisable by clean lines and a sporty silhouette, has appealed to a wide range of car lovers of all ages for years, transcending generations and becoming a timeless classic. Now, the arrival of the Golf GTE plug-in hybrid in New Zealand offers Kiwi drivers a taste of eco-friendly motoring without sacrificing the sporty DNA that has made the Golf a long-standing favorite.
“Volkswagen is committed to embracing the shift towards sustainable transportation, providing consumers with eco-friendly vehicles that allow them to reduce their carbon footprint without compromising performance,” says Volkswagen New Zealand General Manager Chanelle McDonald.
Volkswagon New Zealand provided me with a Golf GTE plug-in hybrid for a recent road trip to Napier from Auckland over Labour Weekend. I’ve tested other electric cars, including the VW ID.5, and as a Golf GTE fan, I was intrigued to experience the hybrid-powered drive myself.
The Golf GTE Plug-In Hybrid Boasts Performance that Packs a Punch
The Golf GTE’s combined system output of 180kW and 400 Nm of torque delivered an exhilarating driving experience on my journey. Thank goodness for cruise control, as this car can really move, going from 0-100 kph in 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 230 kph. This impressive power is the result of Volkswagen’s clever integration of petrol and electric motors, working in harmony to provide responsive acceleration and smooth cruising. The extra electric “Boost” function came in handy when I needed that additional burst of power, especially while overtaking on the open road.

Efficiency Without Compromise
What impressed me was the Golf GTE’s ability to cover up to 60km on electric power, as measured by the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) standard. This feature gives you the option of emission-free and whisper-quiet urban driving. This dual-power hybrid approach means that drivers can enjoy the best of both worlds: zero-emission commuting for daily urban trips and the freedom to embark on longer journeys without range anxiety. The Golf GTE’s ability to switch effortlessly between electric and petrol power lets you confidently take on any drive, whether a quick trip to the local shops or a scenic cross-drive like mine.
Charging was a painless experience at one of the ChargeNet’s charging stations. Volkswagen has thoughtfully designed the charging process to fit seamlessly into modern lifestyles, with a full charge taking approximately seven hours using at-home charging.
Style Meets Substance
The car’s reputation for superior handling and engaging driving dynamics has made it a favorite among hatchback lovers worldwide. The Golf GTE’s sporty yet elegant appearance and stunning deep blue colour certainly turned heads. The striking LED taillight clusters and IQ.LIGHT headlights enhanced the car’s aesthetics and provided excellent visibility during my nighttime return home.
Interior Comfort and Technology
Inside, the Golf GTE didn’t disappoint. The premium sport seats kept me comfortable during the long drive, while the customisable ambient lighting created a personalised atmosphere. My husband enjoyed his role of navigator with the intuitive infotainment system. The configurable driver display made navigating the roads a breeze, with the built-in satellite navigation being a surprising and futuristic touch.
Safety Features You Can Trust
I felt protected knowing the car boasts a five-star ANCAP safety rating. The car’s advanced assistance features include front assist that monitors the traffic situation in front of your car, warning you when you get too close and even applying the brakes to help avoid collision and the lane assist system that senses when the car is drifting out of the driving lane and gently counter-steers the vehicle back in line. I found these to be particularly reassuring as I drove it over a typically notorious time of year for our roads.
Final Thoughts on the Golf GTE Plug-In Hybrid
The car seamlessly blended the best of both worlds—electric efficiency and petrol-powered performance. It made it perfect for quick around-town errands and longer road adventures, providing a safe and spacious cabin with easy-to-use navigation. The Golf GTE plug-in hybrid is an impressive choice if you’re looking for a powerful car that’s also environmentally friendly.
