The 1990s revival shows no sign of slowing down. And while we remember wearing cycling shorts and scrunchies the first time around, there are other nostalgic pulls that keep our hearts in that special time. Celebrity couple of the nineties, for example. From how they coordinated their outfits, to the quotes they said about each other (and love in general), to which movies and shows they starred in together. Here are some of our favourite nineties couples.
Britney Spears & Justin Timberlake
The prince and princess of pop began dating in early 1999 but their relationship went way further than that — they were childhood co-stars on The Mickey Mouse Club in the early to mid-90s. Their powerful matching denim-on-denim moment remains iconic 15 years later.
Cindy Crawford & Richard Gere
One of the more dashing couples in our lineup, these two were married from 1991 to 1995. They met at a barbecue at the home of the late, great photographer Herb Ritts when Crawford was 21. She went on to become the capital-S of supermodels in the ’90s and has said that success (and the age difference) put a wedge in the relationship.
Courtney Love & Kurt Cobain
Claudia Schiffer & David Copperfield
Magician David Copperfield obviously put some sort of spell on supermodel Claudia Schiffer. They first met in 1993 when he brought her up on stage to participate in a mind-reading act and flying illusion — they were engaged a year later. As it turns out, the spell only lasted until 1999, when the pair eventually called it quits.
Elizabeth Hurley & Hugh Grant
No relationship is without its up and downs, and this rule certainly applies to the 13-year union between Grant and Hurley. The two started dating in 1987, and in 1995, Grant famously ran into a little trouble with someone named Divine Brown. Undeniably, it was Hurley in another iconic Versace gown that catapulted the pair into the spotlight.
Gwyneth Paltrow & Brad Pitt
The Hollywood superstars met on the set of iconic thriller Seven and elevated red carpet style with their casually polished looks — remember those matching haircuts?! Paltrow and Pitt were engaged by December 1996. They broke up six months later.
Jennifer Lopez & Sean Combs
After meeting while she was working on her first album, On the 6, in 1999, they were arrested that December in connection with a shooting at a club. They broke up in 2001, but not before he accompanied her to the Grammys when she wore that Versace dress.
Kate Moss & Johnny Depp
Pamela Anderson & Tommy Lee
The Baywatch beauty and bad-boy rocker got married in February 1995, just four days after they met. After a headline-making sex tape scandal and loads of over-the-top PDA (seriously, did anyone make out in public more in the 90s than these two?), the two called it quits in 1998.
Victoria & David Beckham
To this day, the Beckhams are considered British fashion royalty. Back in their leather-clad, frosted tips days, they were Posh and Becks, and Miss Victoria Adams was best known for her alter-ego, Posh Spice. Beckham was a rising star on the English football scene. They met in 1997, and 17 years, a cross-Atlantic move, four kids and a fashion empire later, this most iconic of all the nineties couples are still going strong.
