It’s said that the best designs are timeless, but Volkswagen just proved that even a classic can get a powerful, electric glow-up. The new ID. Buzz is an all-electric reimagining of an icon of the 1960s: the Kombi. This contemporary tribute has been updated with a modern facelift, cutting-edge technology and a commitment to sustainability. A hippy at heart, I was thrilled to put this stylish vehicle to the test and discover for myself if the Buzz keeps the spirit of freedom and adventure of the original Kombi.

What’s the Buzz?

Before we get into my experience driving the ID. Buzz, let’s take a look at the technical details of the vehicle that was awarded the 2025 World Car Design of the Year.

I was surprised to learn that the idea for an all-electric version of the Kombi isn’t new; a prototype version with an electric drive system was designed back in 1972, and 50 years later, VW finally made the dream a reality. Not only is the Buzz 100% electric and carbon-friendly, it also uses recycled materials.

The ID. Buzz is available in four variants—the Pro NWB, Pro LWB, GTX and a Cargo version—with 210 kW of power standard across the range and a powerful 250 kW for the GTX. Range is always a hot topic when it comes to electric vehicles, but it’s not an issue with the Buzz; all four vehicles have quite impressive range, with the NWB getting 382 km, the LWB getting 403 km and the GTX getting 396 km on a full charge.

The interior is spacious and well-designed, featuring a clean, simple dashboard and easy-to-use technology that feels right at home in a modern space. The central touchscreen is easy to navigate and keeps all the essential controls close by without overwhelming you with too many buttons. Little details give the van a special touch, such as the LED headlights that give a friendly “wink” as you approach it. The standard models offer 5 or 7-seat layouts, plus the long wheelbase is also 7-seats and comes with a fully removable third row for when you need extra room.

The moon roof is a stunning feature. This piece of smart glass can instantly switch from transparent to opaque with a single touch, offering instant sun protection without a blind. It filled the cabin with natural light and made the space feel bigger.

The Look That Stops Traffic

Ok, now into my experience. It was love at first sight when I picked up the ID. Buzz from Volkswagen New Zealand in Auckland. The attention-grabbing two-tone blue and white colourway is fresh and modern and aesthetically appealing, as is the vehicle’s overall design; it’s simultaneously a clever nod to the past and a smart step into the future. The unmistakable shape of the original Kombi is still there, but it’s been updated with sleek lines and a modern finish. There’s an effortless coolness to it that’s definitely more of a chic reboot than a tired throwback.

I was so excited to test drive this van and I can confirm it was an experience like no other. It’s a real attention-grabber, not in a loud way but with a magnetic charm that makes people happy to see it. At every stoplight, people would point and stare. People took their phones out to take photos of it. A few times, drivers even pulled up beside us to get a closer look. Everyone I drove past turned their heads and smiled. It has a real feel-good factor to it that’s really charming.

Smooth, Quiet and Effortlessly Cool

I had the Buzz for a couple of days around the city and was impressed with how easy it is to maneuver. I had the LWB version (L 4.962m x W 2.2m), and I’ll admit I was initially apprehensive about the size, but it turned out to be a breeze to park.

To see what it’s like on the open road, my husband and I took to the Coromandel’s beautiful Thames Coast. The drive was nearly silent with none of the usual engine noise, which made the journey feel peaceful and serene, even with the southern motorway traffic. The steering was light and responsive, making it feel more like a car than a van, and the ride was thoroughly enjoyable and comfortable.

The front seats are both soft and supportive, with a massage option available in three different settings. I can confirm that getting a back massage while you’re driving is heaven and a welcome luxury on a longer trip. There’s also plenty of legroom and space to stretch out, charging ports for every passenger and cup holders galore.

The ultimate proof? My husband fell asleep, something he never does in cars.

A concern with any electric vehicle is its range. We completed the entire return journey on a single charge with plenty of charge to spare, proving its reliability not just for daily commutes but for proper weekend escapes.

Final Thoughts on the ID. Buzz

It was with a heavy heart that I had to return the Buzz. This is an exceptional vehicle, offering more than just its electric engine and stylish design.

If you value style, comfort and a connection to something iconic, the ID. Buzz is for you. It’s a vehicle that will make you feel good about what you’re driving, a fun and unique way to get around that leaves an impression on everyone you pass. I can’t wait to see more of them on New Zealand roads—and to own one of my own.
