New Zealand Fashion Week is embracing a new partnership with Ng?ti Wh?tua ?r?kei and revealing the M?ori name “Kahuria.” The event marks a significant step forward for the event, with sustainability, inclusivity, innovation, connection and cultural identity at its core for NZFW 2023.
Through this collaboration, Ng?ti Wh?tua ?r?kei will provide cultural guidance and support to NZFW while gifting the evocative name “Kahuria.”
Derived from the figurative term ‘Te Kahu T?puni o Tuperiri,’ used by Ng?ti Wh?tua ?r?kei to symbolize their tribal area of interest in central T?maki Makaurau, Kahuria carries a profound significance. It translates to ‘the dog skin cloak of Tuperiri,’ an esteemed ancestor of Ng?ti Wh?tua ?r?kei, embodying themes of beauty, innovation, and unity – values that resonate deeply with our mission.
Breaking it down, ‘Kahu’ signifies a garment or cloak, and ‘Kahuria’ signifies adorning. In essence, NZFW personifies Kahuria by providing a platform for designers to proudly share their creations with the world.
“We are honoured to be gifted the name Kahuria and to be working in partnership with tangata whenua Ng?ti Wh?tua ?r?kei to ensure we build a strong foundation of tikanga M?ori into the fabric of this year’s event,” Yasmin Farry, NZFW general manager says. “Our shared intention is for the long-term partnership with Ng?ti Wh?tua ?r?kei to be part of the future of NZFW: Kahuria and we are grateful for their ongoing guidance and support of our kaupapa.”
Ng?ti Wh?tua ?r?kei chair Marama Royal Marama Royal says the iwi welcomes a relationship with NZFW: Kahuria, which has provided the opportunity for a refreshed name that aligns to a cultural narrative relevant to T?maki Makaurau and to the kaupapa of NZFW. “As tangata whenua and host iwi of this kaupapa, we look forward to strengthening our relationship with the prestigious NZFW: Kahuria event and team and cannot wait to see the wonderful display of design talent.”
